10 Unexpected Travel Items I Always Pack (That You’ll Actually Use)

We all know to pack the basics: toothbrush, charger, maybe an extra pair of socks. But there are a few unexpected items that have completely changed the way I travel—things that save time, fix problems, or just make my trip way more comfortable.

Here are 10 underrated, non-obvious items I always throw in my suitcase (or carry-on), whether I’m going on a weekend getaway or a long-haul adventure. They’re all tested, loved, and travel advisor-approved!

1. A Flat Lay Packing Mat

This one’s part organizer, part aesthetic moment. I use it to plan outfits before packing, but it also comes in handy at your destination—especially in hotels with limited space. Bonus: it makes packing back up way easier.

2. Foldable Travel Hangers

Yes, hotels have hangers… but usually not enough, and definitely not for things like swimsuits or delicates. I pack 2–3 lightweight foldable ones and use them for drip-drying or hanging outfits I want wrinkle-free.

3. Collapsible Water Bottle

I hate paying $6 for airport water. A silicone collapsible water bottle fits in your personal item and fills up post-security—plus, you’re less likely to forget it in your hotel room when it takes up no space.

4. Mini First Aid Kit

Nothing fancy—just a zip pouch with blister pads, a few bandaids, travel-size pain relievers, allergy meds, and a motion sickness tab or two. I can’t tell you how many times this has saved my day (or a client’s).

5. Portable White Noise Machine or App

If you’re a light sleeper, this is gold. Hotel walls are thin. Hallways are loud. I’ve used a compact white noise machine or even a white noise app + portable speaker to get solid sleep—even with a toddler in tow.

6. Magnetic Hooks

This is one of my top mom-travel hacks. Pop a couple of strong magnetic hooks in your bag and suddenly that cruise cabin, hotel bathroom, or RV door has a place to hang backpacks, swimwear, or toiletry bags.

7. A Luggage Scale

Overweight luggage fees? No thanks. This $10 gadget gives you peace of mind before heading to the airport. Especially helpful if you like to shop while traveling or pack extra for the family.

8. Reusable Wet/Dry Bag

Perfect for separating dirty laundry, wet swimsuits, or even snacks and toys. I always pack at least one (sometimes two) and use them in my carry-on or day bag to keep everything organized and clean.

9. Compact Power Strip with USB Ports

Hotel rooms never have enough outlets—especially when you're traveling as a couple or family. A slim, travel-friendly power strip lets you charge all your devices in one place, and it’s a lifesaver in airports or cruise cabins.

10. A Small Roll of Duct Tape (Trust Me)

I know it sounds weird—but duct tape has fixed broken suitcase wheels, secured hotel curtains, sealed leaky bottles, and created toddler-proof drawer locks. Just roll a foot or two around an old gift card and toss it in your toiletry bag. Magic.
