The Hidden Costs Travelers Forget (And How to Avoid Them)
The Hidden Costs Travelers Forget (And How to Avoid Them)
You’ve budgeted for flights, hotels, and maybe even a splurge dinner… but somehow your “$2,000 trip” ends up closer to $2,800. I see it all the time. The culprit? Hidden costs that most travelers don’t factor in until it’s too late.
Here are the ones I warn all my clients about—and how to avoid them.
1. Resort and Destination Fees
Many hotels (especially in the U.S. and Caribbean) charge $30–$60 per night in “resort” or “destination” fees, covering things like Wi-Fi, beach chairs, or gym access. They’re rarely included in your booking price upfront. Always ask before booking or work with a travel advisor who can negotiate perks that make them worthwhile.
2. Airport Transfers and Local Transport
Even “all-inclusive” trips often don’t include your ride from the airport. Shuttle services can cost $30–$80 per person each way, or more for private cars. I always help clients factor this in (or book transfers for them).
3. Tipping and Service Charges
Many resorts include gratuities, but not all. Some countries (like Mexico) add a service charge, but additional tips are expected. Knowing the etiquette can save you both embarrassment and unexpected cash drain.
4. Luggage Fees
Low-cost carriers love to advertise $100 flights—but add $60 for checked bags and $45 for carry-ons, and you’re suddenly paying more than a standard airline. Always read the fine print (or let someone else do it for you).
5. Activities and Add-Ons
Want to snorkel, zipline, or do a food tour? These extras add up fast. I always suggest building in an “activity budget” upfront so the fun doesn’t become a financial stressor.
