3 Packing Tips Every Mom Needs to Know

Packing for a family trip can feel like preparing for battle. Between making sure everyone has the right clothes, remembering the snacks, and keeping track of all the “just in case” items, it’s no wonder moms often end up exhausted before the vacation even begins. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be that way.

After planning and taking countless family trips, I’ve learned a few tried-and-true packing strategies that make the process smoother, lighter, and far less stressful. Today I’m sharing my top three tips every mom needs to know.

1. Pack by Person, Not by Category

One of the easiest mistakes moms make is packing all the shirts together, all the pants together, and so on. While this might seem organized, it often leads to a messy suitcase and kids asking, “Where’s my stuff?” the second you arrive.

Instead, pack by person. Give each child their own packing cube or zippered bag with complete outfits. Label them if needed. That way, when it’s time to get dressed, you can just hand them their bag and let them go. This saves time, keeps the suitcase organized, and gives kids a sense of independence.

2. The Rule of Three

Here’s a little travel secret: you don’t need nearly as much clothing as you think you do. Stick to the rule of three—three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of underwear (plus extras for little ones who may need more). With some mixing, matching, and laundry if necessary, this is usually plenty for most trips.

This rule cuts down on overpacking, which means fewer heavy bags to lug through airports or stuff into the car. It also leaves space in your luggage for souvenirs and keeps your hotel room less cluttered.

3. Don’t Forget the “Mom Bag” Essentials

Even if you’re checking luggage, keep a well-stocked “mom bag” with you at all times. This should include:

  • Snacks (because hungry kids = cranky kids)
  • Wipes (trust me, you’ll need them)
  • A change of clothes for younger kids
  • Headphones or small toys for entertainment
  • Travel documents and IDs
  • Any necessary medications

This bag will be your lifesaver when unexpected delays or meltdowns happen. Think of it as your emergency kit for the journey.

The Bottom Line

Packing doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. By organizing by person, sticking to the rule of three, and having your mom bag ready, you’ll feel more prepared and less stressed before and during your trip.

Because at the end of the day, vacations are about making memories—not lugging around an overstuffed suitcase. Travel smarter, not harder, and you’ll enjoy the journey just as much as the destination.
